It was so nice to get back to Birmingham, Alabama to shoot a wedding this June!!  I always enjoy my time in Birmingham!!  I love the atmosphere, the vibes, and most of all the people.  Such an eclectic group of people that live here, it really kind of takes you out of Alabama.  My couple Anna & Joey share the same love for Birmingham, and it was a focus to grab some of that love for the city in some of their images.

All of our getting ready images were taken at the Tutwiler Hotel located in downtown Birmingham which is a super popular spot for not only weddings but always for just the prep.  This was a pretty small low key intimate wedding day, and Anna’s bridal party was a lot of fun to photograph.  Just really down to earth people that I could relate to and appreciate.  Big props to Grace and Truth Weddings for keep everything super organized and going the extra mile for Anna and Joey all day.  It was my first time working with them, but hopefully it won’t be the last.  It was also my first time photographing out at Roots and Revelry (the ceremony and reception venue).  Super open space with tons of beautiful clean natural light which really made some rare indoor sun flares during the formal dances to kick off the reception.  In the building on the first floor was some really interesting light and open space that I used to photograph the groom/groomsmen as well as some of the couple portraits.  Really loved that space down there, it felt like I was kind of searching for that type of space and light to work in the entire day and it was a welcomed sight to see when we changed venues.

It doesn’t happen as often as it used to when I don’t officially meet the couple until the wedding day, but this was one of those weddings.  My luck continues to press on with the most incredible couples to work with.  Anna and Joey were an absolute pleasure to work with throughout the entire process.  Their friends and family were just as awesome to work with throughout the wedding day, and I’m quite sure Savoi Catering provided probably the best possible wedding menu I’ve ever had.  Some fun facts that occurred throughout the wedding day, we didn’t include in the images here were that at times Anna and here bridal party would just throw up the bird randomly.  Like it was thing for them, and I was like hell yeah……because I knew we connected on a comfort level throughout the day so that they could totally be themselves.  There were even a few family images where the bird was given (all in a hilarious way).  When I found the space on the first floor of the ceremony/reception venue there was an abandoned old school iPod on a table.  Powered on, and paused.  Like it was just abandoned out of nowhere.  At the end of the night that iPod was still there with a full charged battery.  I wonder if it’s still there???

During the ceremony we heard some really familiar music but couldn’t really put a finger on it as it was all piano tracks……and then it hit us that it was all Tom Petty originals on the piano.  The reception jams were all pretty much an 80’s new wave vibe, and they threw down all night!  Just from a choice of music standpoint I loved the concept.  It’s sometimes these smaller unique wedding days I photograph that I offer so much character and memorable moments that I’ll take with me.  To end the night Anna and Joey’s sendoff was both sparklers and confetti!!  I thought that was pretty fun and a little different.  Anna and Joey will sadly be leaving Birmingham this year as they relocate to Indiana.  I know they’ll miss Birmingham very much, but how awesome is it that they get to always look back on their wedding day to bring back all of the love not only for each other but also for the Magic City they fell in love with??  I’m super honored to be a part of that for them.
